Member Policies

The following is general information regarding the club: how to become a registered member (if you haven't already), how to get involved, and club resources available for registered members.

What do we do?

In short, the outdoors club is a group of SFU students who love to be outside and are passionate about outdoor sports. Our members enjoy mountain biking, rock climbing, kayaking, hiking, mountaineering, snowshoeing, skiing, surfing, diving, and pretty much anything that gets us out in nature and having fun.

The club's objective (other than having a blast) is to create a community of SFU students who are outdoor enthusiasts, and help students discover new outdoor activities and realize the potential for adventure that British Columbia has. We're all about getting outside, having fun, trying new sports, and exploring the beautiful outdoor playground which surrounds us here in Vancouver.

The club provides the means for members to get in touch via monthly club socials and the message board (forum). Both are a great way to organize trips, share rides and gear, and meet other like-minded outdoorsy people. If you've never really done much outdoors stuff before, the club is also an excellent way to try out new activities and see what adventure sports are all about.

How to become an SFU Outdoors Club member?

You must pay the yearly $30 membership fee, and sign the club waiver. To do this, you can show up at a monthly club social or go on an official club trip. The organizer will have waiver forms, and will give your club membership fees to our finance exec.

Our membership year goes from September-August. People who join the club in the summer term (May-August) will have a membership that is valid through the following school year.

What your membership fees go to?

$15 goes towards club insurance costs, and $15 is used to buy more club gear. Club gear is free for all members to borrow.

How to get involved?

All club trips and events are organized on the club forum. There is a bi-monthly newsletter that is sent out highlighting upcoming trips / events, but don't depend on this. A lot of trips can become full quite fast, so check the forum regularly.
If you are interested in becoming part of the executive team or leading one of the official club trips, please e-mail ac.ufs|bulcsroodtuo-ofni#ac.ufs|bulcsroodtuo-ofni or contact one of the execs. There are always extra tasks to help out with that will improve the club.

How to login to the forum?

If it is your first time on the forum, click "register" and follow all the prompts. You will then be able to access and post stuff on the forum.

Club trips and events?

You can take part in as many club trips as you want and anyone can organize trips. We organize official club events every semester including the semester kickoff social, a monthly club social, and some beginner & advanced trips to get new people involved. A final official club event list will be posted on the forum in the week or so, but these trips will be organized as all the others are: posted on the forum by the organizer. Meanwhile, there are lots of trips being organized by members on the forum. If you don't see what you like, organize something by yourself. If you don't know where to start, an overview / event planning form is posted on the forum. Ultimately, it's all about members being active and networking to get trips going.

Vancouver is one of the few places in the world where you can go kayaking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and skiing all on the same day. What I'm trying to say with this is that there is rarely a shortage of things to do and that we are very lucky to live in a place with so many possibilities for adventure. So if you don't see a trip that interests you or have a cool idea for a trip you've been planning but never got around to, take the initiative and get something organized!
